Technologies that “touch the future.” Print solutions that increase your customers’ experiences. These are the technologies trending this year in the printing community — and you can see them all on display at drupa 2016 in Germany.

As drupa 2016 trends and buzz continue to build, look out for more information about the following solutions that can spell more opportunities for your print shop:

Integrated communications services

Customers touched by “multi-channels” — direct mail, email, websites, mobile devices, and more — spend three to four times more than single-channel customers spend.  As such, an integrated digital solution should connect easily and effectively with almost any system or platform, both hardware and software.

Short-run, on-demand, personalized digital packaging

This market segment, which includes boxes, swing tags, tie racks and more, is set to grow 31 percent this year. Digital cut-sheet production printers, supported by workflow and finishing solutions, handle such packaging. This category also includes one of the biggest print trends: custom bottle labels. As these personalized label options gain popularity, fifth-color capabilities can give your shop an opportunity to expand its portfolio with eye-popping colors on metallic substrates and curved surfaces.

Value-added creative print effects

This technology is used for packaging, labels, point of sale and direct mail. According to the Direct Marketing Association, boxes with a teaser on the outside outperform standard formats by 250 percent, but increase the cost per lead by only 50 percent. Along with these creative effects, new color offerings, like white and clear toner, are causing a lot of excitement among designers.

New publishing business model

The book market is back in style again. There has been a rising demand to produce high quality, color trade books in small quantities with short lead times. This is exciting because clients can launch books into the marketplace quicker, and books can be kept in print indefinitely. Production inkjet is ideal for these publishing jobs.

For more on today’s print trends, the first results of the second drupa Global Insights Report, “Touch the future – Applications that can create growth,” are out now. The report covers best practice in implementing new print applications; demand for print and the impact of digital communications; and other important topics for your print shop.
