Allen Taheri wanted to try something new. While still a college student, he found A2Z Printing in Jackson, Mississippi, and persuaded a friend to join him in the venture. Although the duo had no printing experience, they opened the shop with a single 45-pages-per-minute copier and a lot of confidence.

For a while, everything was ticking over nicely so Taheri purchased new printers and chased new customers. He took on projects that allowed little margin for error — political promotions, concert flyers, college football programs. But the high demand and tight deadlines put too much strain on his slow printers and over-matched devices, which broke down daily.

Welcome the new

Rather than backpedal, he decided, again, to try something new. Scrapping the worn-out presses, he overhauled his fleet and made a strategic decision: invest in digital printing technology.

“The added capacity, speed, reliability and new capabilities sparked a revenue growth of $800K in the first year.”

A new digital printing system not only met his speed requirements, but rarely broke down. In fact, downtime was reduced nearly 500 percent. The added capacity, speed, reliability and new capabilities sparked a revenue growth of $800K in the first year.

A colorful view

Next, Taheri turned his fertile imagination to color, envisioning what white and clear toners — doubled with offbeat substrates — would add to his portfolio.

He’d been searching for a solution when he attended GRAPH EXPO ’14 and spotted the solution of his dreams. He ordered it on the spot. The new press positioned him to print posters, banners, clings, magnets and more.

Still at the top of his priority list was customer satisfaction. One of his best customers, a weekly newspaper, turned in proofs in the morning for delivery that afternoon. Taheri found a digital press that could churn out up to one million black-and-white pages a month, with very little downtime. He reckoned to handle the newspaper’s requirements, with plenty of capacity to spare for other clients.

Instead of a hodgepodge fleet, A2Z Printing has now a collection of state-of-the-art, digital presses that can print black-and-white, five color, wide format, variable data and more–everything to deliver on the company’s promise, “If you can think it, we can print it.”

Still a visionary

Taheri spends time with his customers discussing how they can expand their business by trying new things. It’s a strategy that has paid off for A2Z Printing. Nearly a decade after plugging in that first copier, Taheri enjoys a legion of loyal customers. But he is constantly on the alert for the next, new technology that will propel his business into new areas of growth.
